Our Commitment to Accessibility
Global Diaspora Christian University (GDCU) is committed to ensuring that our website, learning platforms, and digital services are accessible to everyone, regardless of ability or technology. We believe that education should be borderless and inclusive, and that principle extends to how we design and deliver our online presence.
We strive to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standards, and we are continuously working to improve the accessibility of our digital platforms.
Supported Accessibility Features
Our website includes the following accessibility features:
- Semantic HTML structure: Proper use of headings, landmarks, and ARIA labels for screen reader compatibility.
- Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements are accessible via keyboard.
- Focus indicators: Clear visual focus indicators for keyboard users.
- Colour contrast: Text and interactive elements meet minimum contrast ratio requirements.
- Responsive design: Content adapts to different screen sizes and orientations.
- Text resizing: Content remains readable when text is resized up to 200%.
- Alternative text: Informative images have descriptive alt text.
- Form labels: All form fields have associated labels for screen reader compatibility.
Keyboard Navigation
Our website supports full keyboard navigation. You can use the following keys to navigate:
- Tab: Move forward through interactive elements.
- Shift + Tab: Move backward through interactive elements.
- Enter / Space: Activate buttons, links, and form controls.
- Escape: Close menus, modals, and overlays.
- Arrow keys: Navigate within menus and lists.
Mobile Accessibility
Our website is designed to be fully functional on mobile devices. We ensure that:
- Touch targets are adequately sized for finger interaction.
- Content reflows properly on small screens without horizontal scrolling.
- Forms and interactive elements are usable on touch devices.
- Text remains readable without requiring zoom.
Text Contrast
We ensure that text and interactive elements have sufficient colour contrast against their backgrounds to be readable by users with low vision or colour vision deficiencies. Our colour palette is selected with accessibility as a priority.
Alternative Text for Images
All informative images on our website include descriptive alternative text (alt text) that conveys the purpose and content of the image. Decorative images are marked with empty alt attributes so they are ignored by screen readers.
